Whats this Cactus? Thank you everyone x

Post by alexsalter47 »

My mother bought me this Cactus for birthday, from a local garden centre, we will in the UK,

The first image, is the Cactus in its current location, its getting good air and sun, as its on the sill and also out growing the vase.

I've bought a new vase, that is double the Cactuses Height.

Its to big to sit on the sill, so I was thinking of placing it on the PC desk, that is on the opposite side of the room, not exactly in a sun lit area, /indirection/ambient, I guess.

Thank you guys.

It should be in a pot (with drain hole at the bottom) and not a vase. Also it looks more like a Euphorbia than a cactus (but the growing conditions should be the same)

P.S. - if it is a cactus it looks like Monvillea spegazzini.

Thank you so much for the fast reply.

I wonder if there is a way of drilling into the bottom of the big vase? So it can have drainage.

I actually dont know what Euphorbias are, but i ll for sure research them.

Thank you again

Yes glass can be drilled if not tempered like a car glass. A vase most likely is not tempered.

It is Senecio (Kleinia) stapeliformis.
Z, in (mostly) sunny Lisbon.

They do make glass drilling bits for the Dremel, so yes.

You need to provide strong artificial light for it if you move it away from the window - in fact it looks like it wasn't getting enough light there. An LED spot light would work well.

Hey everyone,

Will this be a good buy for my cactus? Thank you

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Xcellent-Globa ... 2GH18J4M0M

I've just drilled 3 holes into the bottom of a straight cylinder vase which is much bigger for it to grow in, its about twice as tall as the plant atm. so i can hook the light to the top of it easily.

and the holes will now help with drainage.

That light would be bright enough, certainly. It will look weird under that purple light - green doesn't show up at all under those, while the pale stripes will appear to be glowing purple. If you like that, fine. It doesn't need to be a special grow-light bulb, a warm-white light of the same or slightly more power would do if you'd rather see the plant's natural appearance.

I think jfabiao is right, it's Senecio stapeliiformis, not a cactus. As far as caring for it, it makes little difference
