I have a plant which people elsewhere have suggested is an E.rhodotricha. But I am having my doubts because
- The pictures on cactiguide are ambiguous and don't really look like my plan.
- Every description I read says it has large areolas whereas those of this specimen are barely 2 mm accross.
- Mine has 4-6 spines per areole whereas descriptions indicate more.
- The spines on mine are not firm, but long and bending, very slim.
So, does anyone have a better idea? No, I haven't seen flowers, unfortunately

Re: Echinopsis rhodotricha?
That's an interesting suggestion! I'll keep it in mind if one day I see flowers. On the other hand, I am looking on different acanthocalyciums and some have a great deal of resemblance to this one. Could it be?

If you haven't seen flowers yet - it is likely a Fero

I think Ferocactus echidne looks pretty likely,, though I do see a resemblance to Acanthocalycium spiniflorum.

Thank you all! I now have three decent hypotheses! We'll wait and see!
Re: Echinopsis rhodotricha?
Ferocactus was my first thought before reading the other posts also.

Re: Echinopsis rhodotricha?
Update: This guy finally flowered for me this year. It is evidently Acanthocalycium spiniflorum (violaceum)
