The problems with tetrancistra culture are coming from the fact that they are adapted to the rain pattern with little precipitation in late spring and summer, and that is the time when cacti from many other places are actively growing and actively watered in culture. The mismatch of grow conditions to the plant adaptations is the way to kill the plants in culture.
That is why many cacti from SW US deserts are considered difficult to grow - people treat them the way they think is 'right for all cacti' - dry winters and wet summers, but not all cacti are the same. As you know, the weather pattern is different in Mojave desert, and it needs to be reflected in culture.

Ordinarily, you could just plant them and let nature take its course. Since the region is in the midst of a prolonged drought right now, though, I think you'd need to water to get them established. You need to look up the climate data for your area (easily found online) and mimic the normal rainfall pattern. That is, unless the drought comes to an end, but I wouldn't count on that happening soon.
