Help me with a brain freeze?

Post by BarryRice »

Hey guys

Could any of you help me with figuring out this cactus species?

It is a small clustering cactus, with round segments covered with radial spines. It looks very much like Rebutia rauschii, but it is actually an opuntiad! I believe it has sometimes been placed in its own genus, but that it has been put, perhaps, back into Opuntia.

Oh, it is not a tephrocactus. I saw it in someone's collection but didn't write down the name. Drat.
I'll grow it as long as it doesn't have glochids. Gaudy flowers a plus.

Tephrocactus bonnieae? Cumulopuntia subterranea? Cumulopuntia rossiana 'fuauxiana'?

Probably tephrocactus bonniae or sometimes called puna bonniae as phil says.
And as the walls come down and as I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade recalling all of the times
I have died and will die.
It's all right.
I dont mind
I dont mind.
I DONT MIND

Spination in bonniae can vary though:-

http://tephro.com/index.php/the-journal ... =101%5C%22" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As can subterraneus:-

http://www.cactus-art.biz/schede/PUNA/P ... rranea.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.cactiguide.com/cactus/?uname ... ubterranea" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As the first link says bonniae was not considered a Tephrocactus initially, but has now been moved there.

Ahhh!!!! Thank you! I had seen the plant in question listed as Puna bonnieae. I didn't write it down and it's been driving me nuts.
I'll grow it as long as it doesn't have glochids. Gaudy flowers a plus.

Named after Bonnie Brunkow, it's bonnie +ae, bonnieae, even though that looks a bit odd.
