I like this one but what is it?

Post by AussieCactusNoob »

hi everyone!

Anyone know what my lovely cactus might be? I was told it was San Pedro but it seems not to be. I don't mind but i'd love to know what it is! :-)

Tough to say exactly. The San Pedro is Echinopsis pachanoi (or Trichocereus pachanoi), Echinopsis peruviana (Trichocereus peruvianus) is known as San Pedro Macho - could be that, or a hybrid of the two, there are a lot of hybrids around. Echinopsis lageniformis (Trichocereus bridgesii), another similar species, could also be in the mix.

I would say it is either a t. Peruvianus or t. Cuzcoensis. I'm leaning more towards cuzcoensis.

I should have mentioned cuzcoensis too, that's another closely related species. Yes, it could be that one, too. I still lean more toward peruviana, but you could be right - it's very hard to tell for sure.

For me it's really hard distinguishing between peruvianus and cuzcoensis. Especially since they are so closely related. I'm mainly interested in the giant trichocereus, terscheckii, taquimbalensis, etc. But whatever it is it's a great looking cactus. I've wanted to add a cuzcoensis to my collection for a while but I have too many columnars in my collection already for my limited space.

My main reason for saying it's more likely peruviana is that cuzcoensis is much less common, I can't really tell either.
