Two unknown Mammillarias

Post by aprotopa »

Can someone identity these two mammillaria please. The one on the right came as M.leptangatha but I don't think that this is correct.

The one on the left looks like M. geminspina. Perhaps ssp leucocentra which tends to have shorter and paler central spines, Or M. parkinsonii which can be hard to tell apart with young plants. M. mystax isn't usually so hairy.

The one on the right might be a sparsely and weakly spined M. leptacantha. The plant looks like it was grown in low light.

I have attached close-ups of the two Mammillaria so that you can see the details on the plants for easier identification. .

Probably some type of M. crinita. They're highly variable but yours is within the natural range.

Mammillaria zeilmanniana is now considered a subspecies of M. crinita, which iann said it was, so you're in agreement - I also agree with that.

The first shown plant can be also Mammillaria (formosa ssp.) chionocephala, even most likely.

One on the right Andreas looks a lot like Mammillaria wildii, sometimes considered a subspecies of crinita.

"M.leptangatha"

I presume they meant M. leptantha which is a variety of M. rekoi, and it's certainly not that:-

I think you mean leptacantha, Dave - but you're right, it doesn't fit.

Yes leptacantha, me not further checking the spelling since I perpetuated the spelling mistake in the link I gave!
