Two Columnars for ID please

Post by savant »

I'm always stuck on names for my columnars and I've got names for all but two of them.

You sure the first one isn't Echinopsis Huascha ?

I agree with the Pilosocereus.

I have E. Spachianus and it looks nothing like that.

Could the top one be a Trichocereus sp?

Trichocereus has been merged with Echinopsis. So yes, that's what they're saying. I'm thinking hybrids, myself.

I actually think the first is also Pilosocereus; in this case, P. chrysostele.

Here's a photo of mine when it was a similar size in 2012 (originally sold as Austrocephalocereus estevesii [=Micranthocereus estevesii]...commonly available at Home Depots and Lowe's at least in the Phoenix area). It's clearly not M. estevesii as originally labeled, and based on some research and additional opinions, I've identified mine as P. chrysostele.

And, here it is today (it grows fast!):

I though of P. chrysostele when I saw the first picture too, both P. chrysostele and P. pachycladus are found close to where I live so it kind of seems familiar when you see one.

The second one doesn't look much like the P. pachycladus I usually see, so I'm thinking maybe because it's on cultivation or maybe it's another subspecies?
Some more detailed pictures could help.
