The second one looks like Parodia (or Notocactus) scopa.

The first one looks exactly like the first cactus I ever bought when I was in high school. I'll bet anything it's a Trichocereus/Echinopsis spachianus/-a.
Catch a falling star--but don't try it with a cactus!

No such luck. It lasted a few years and succumbed (probably) to lack of proper care. I was not "into" the finer details of raising cacti. I couldn't have kept it through all my college years and then moving around in my first jobs. And we're talking about 50 years ago!

Are you sure about the Tricho ID? To me it looks more like a Cleistocactus - the spines seem to be a good fit as well as the body. Not sure I'd want to make a species ID though - looks like C. strausii but with maybe too few ribs (hard to tell plant size from the picture) and somewhat short-ish spines.
