Help with "opuntia"?" I.D.
Went to a local plant sale and bought this for $3 among other things. The lady seemed to like island and tropical cacti if that helps with the I.D. I think she was talking about the cayman islands and/or hawaii?

How big is that? If it's small, it could be the same as one I've got - which I've been unable to identify.

It's pretty sizable, almost a foot tall at best. There are several smaller ones in the pot with it that you can see in the picture, does yours look like them by chance?

Not a lot bigger - mine is about 8" tall. I bought it as a small start, kept it in pretty small pots, I don't know how big it will get. See for yourself - there's a definite resemblance:

Id say they are pretty similar if not the same! Hopefully someone can chime in!

I posted pictures of mine here over a year ago, and I'm still waiting for that to happen. Hope springs eternal...

Haha that it is! I'll post on my cactus society's facebook page and see if anyone can help us out!

These look similar but are rather small. Though might be the same.

There are resemblances, but Opuntia subulata (syn. Austrocylindropuntia subulata) has large, persistent leaves, and the stems remain cylindrical. One the ones we have here, the stems at the base are cylindrical but become flattened higher on the plant, the leaves are very small and don't persist - a strange mix of characteristics.
Thanks for trying, anyway.

Try having a look at some consolea species.

That would fit the tropical island cactus description, but I can't find any close matches there either - though there are, again, resemblances to certain features.cactidan wrote:Try having a look at some consolea species.
The same goes for Tacinga.
