For an accurate ID it would help to know if this cultivated or wild and if the latter, where is it growing.

It was growing wild in Canyonlands National Park in Utah.

Thank you Ivan, I just did. I didn't realize that the prickly pear spines grow that long, but it said that they can grow as long as 3-4 inches. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Canyon Lands region is one of my study areas. The plant is very likely to be Opuntia nicholii.

Hi Dean,
Thank you for the clarification. I found several pictures that show the long spines, and several common names - Navajo Bridge Prickly Pear, Hair-spine Prickly Pear, and Nichol's Prickly Pear. This really helps.
Thank you very much!
