Echinocereus engelmanii?

Post by BarryRice »

Hey Guys,

I have the following plant, without provenance information. Any guesses? The flowers really are that nice purplish color...

Cheers

Barry

P.S. I'm not happy about that ugly yellowish cast to the plants, by the way. I'm not sure of the cause. These are plants being grown far from their native habitats, so there are a variety of possible explanations....

I'll grow it as long as it doesn't have glochids. Gaudy flowers a plus.

Very nice flowers. I'd guess that it is not E. engelmannii or at least not like any of the forms I see here or grow.

That looks like Echinocereus "apachensis," which is a diploid in the fendleri group, with overlapping range with bonkerae. It's an interesting form from the Superstitions in AZ and if you compare flowers with fendleri or bonkerae you will see they are almost identical. 'apachensis' is not a very well defined form over its range but the extremes are very distinct.
