Hey guys,
A few years ago I picked up a plant with the above name, which is not listed in cactiguide. Googling away, I found that some infraspecific varieties have been assigned to Rebutia canigueralii, but they don't look like this beast.
It has spectacular red flowers, and offsets freely. The spines start off small, but on large plants they become huge. The plant has very large, almost tuberous roots.
For scale, that's a 5" pot.
Any thoughts?
Cheers
Barry

I'll grow it as long as it doesn't have glochids. Gaudy flowers a plus.
Re: "Rebutia verticillacantha"
There's Sulcorebutia verticillacantha, related to/a subspecies of steinbachii. Looks about right for this.

Does not look like Sulcorebutia verticillacantha to me:-

More of a S. steinbachii type from the long spines:-

Hey Guys,
Yesterday I figured out that it is Rebutia steinbachii subsp. verticillacantha. I would have posted earlier, but Cactiguide was down.

Re: "Rebutia verticillacantha"
You post links to some dreadful webpages and one seemingly synonymising a plant with both steinbachii and canigueralii ranks as one of the most awful! Identifying sulcos is a minefield as often similar looking ones are different and wildly different looking ones are the same, all of which probably explains the rate at which new sulco discoveries are published (7 sp. and 1 var. since 2010).DaveW wrote:Does not look like Sulcorebutia verticillacantha to me:-

I recommend http://www.sulcopassion.be/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (currently not working, oddly) and http://www.kakteenforum.com/f184-sulcorebutia-lexikon" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; as better sources (whatever you might think of the classification!) On the latter you'll find http://www.kakteenforum.com/t10644-sulc ... var-cuprea" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which is a fair match, I think.
