Noooooo! It is not a cactus? darn! I am disapointed. The spines were very stragne, like wooden, and I wondered, I've never seen spines like that, but I liked that plant, anyway, never mind. I like it whether it's cactus or not... :)

And the other one? Some sort of Notocactus (parodia)?

Hi Eustace, I think this link might help http://www.cactiguide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2527
As you can see I too have one like yours, definitely not a cactus but the succulents are fascinating too you know, I have both :)
I think probably a Noto (Parodia) on the other but not sure which one, any chance of a close-up photo?
Others who know their cacti better than me may well know at a glance

Don't knock Euphorbias - ones like yours are the cacti of the Old World. There are quite a few that stand up and have spines like that. And they're a devil to sort out.. I love your Parodia (assuming it is one - I'd go for that but wouldn't care to say which...).

Hi Eustace, I think your #1 plant is Euphorbia polygona "Snowflake"... A much prized form of E. polygona...
All I can say is... "luck, luck, lucky!! :D
