new cacti need names

Post by bett »

I got me some new cacti recently, but I've only narrowed a few down to the genus names. Anyone have any ideas?

These first 3 I got at my school last month. There was some event going on where they were giving away cacti and ceramic pots to decorate, so I picked out a few nice plants. They're all in 2 inch pots, and I have photos from the top if anyone needs them.

Looks like an Echinocactus.

Some species of Mammillaria?

No idea on this one at all.

This one I bought today from Sears as a birthday present for myself. I was eying the cacti they had there the other month, and there were some nice looking ones for 5 bucks. I stood around for a while today trying to pick one. There were some nice little Mamms, but I decided on this one in the end. It's in a 4 inch pot. The areoles remind me of a Rebutia, but I wasn't sure about the ridges.

As far as i'm concerned #2 could be coryphantha aswell.

And #3 could be Weberbauerocereus johnsonii.

#2: fluff in the axils, no sign of grooves. Seems like Mammillaria, but I don't know which one.

Looks like Ferocactus and Oroya are a match. The third one does look like it could be Weberbauerocereus. It's starting to make longer spines towards the top, while some of the others of its type at school had much longer spines all over and others had just the short, fine spines. Are the long spines characteristic of the species or just individual variations?

That third one could be Clistocactus winteri too - just deceiving when they are so small.
