Copiapoa
Copiapoa
I am going to be focusing a lot on this familiy and need some advice please.
If you can only get one Copiapoa book, which one would you get?
Limited funds and these things are pricey as all get out.
Guessing it is between "Copiapoa in their Environment" and "Copiapoa 2006". The only other one I see is the Cactus File Handbook Vol.4
Thanks!

Re: Copiapoa
Only have the Graham Charles one (Cactus File Handbook), but though I have over 1500 cactus books and journals I never overlook all the free information on the Internet if you Google for it since there is a lot of information in electronic as well as printed form these days:-

However you still can't beat a handy book.

Re: Copiapoa
You might want to ask Daiv about this one as well. http://www.exoticplantbooks.com/detail/?product_id=95" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Re: Copiapoa
Copiapoa is a genus not a family. Sorry, the taxonomist in me is forced to point that out!
Anyway, those two books are by the same author. From reading the descriptions on Daiv's site it seems like the 2006 book is an updated version of the other one, so I'd lean towards that.
I have Schulz's Aeonium book and I find it useful (it is pretty much the only book on the genus), but I have some issues with it. He doesn't clearly differentiate between species despite having entries for all of them and he is extremely prone to calling a hybrid anything in cultivation he is unsure about even if there is no reason to believe it is a hybrid. He also doesn't always make clear why he's lumped some species together. That being said, I'm still very happy to have that book. I know you are interested in Copiapoa not Aeonium, but it wouldn't surprise me if some of the same tendencies are seen in all of his books.

Not in a huge hurry to purchase yet. In the next 2 months or so. Will wait and see other input on this. Am sure Daiv will have some good points also.

Re: Copiapoa
Hi, well the Cactus File book has been out of print for a while. I see there is a used one for sale for $85.00 on Amazon. That's a lot more than the cover price, but at least it isn't $400 like is often the case on out of print books on Amazon.
Anyway, that is a good book if you can get it.
The Schulz books are great, but he does have a different taxonomy than Graham or the NCL (which pretty much follows GC).
I just ran out of "Copiapoa 2006" and I'm not positive if I can get any more. Rudolf Schulz sends them from his brother's place. I'll see if I can get them. If not, I'm pretty sure Chuck has a few left.
The first version of his book is soon to be gone for good too.
That's it for the books that are specific to the genus. Sounds limited, but many other genera are lucky to have one monograph available.

I will see if I can get the Cactus File book, and then the Copiapoa 2006. Or which ever is available at the time of purchase.
Will check with you Daiv, when I am ready to buy, and see if you have a lead on either.
Cheers

Re: Copiapoa
I won't be getting any more of the Cactus File books, I know that for sure. As for the Copiapoa 2006, I should know in a day or two if I can get more of those.

Re: Copiapoa
I often wonder where the second-hand book sellers get their prices from and why so many different prices, especially for books that were not that expensive in the first place. For instance the vastly different price for Grahams book here, the fact one is paperback and the other hard bound should not make that difference:-
http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/Searc ... cm_ven=aff" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The same book went on UK EBAY for £20 recently.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Copiapoa-Grah ... 3380e0c33e" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Keep an eye on EBAY, you can set your search so you get an email notification when a book you are after is posted. Another went recently for just over $39:-
http://www.ebay.com/itm/COPIAPOA-THE-CA ... 5d38bd8f4d" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I was amazed to see an out of print book that I bought for about £20 new on Echinocereus recently was listed as £220 second-hand by some of those second-hand book dealers!

Re: Copiapoa
Well that's another thing.. I'm pretty darn sure that the Charles Copiapoa book was NEVER printed as a Hardbound. So I think that is misleading. I have seen thicker "softcover" books that are somewhat flexible being listed as "hardcover", but to me a hardcover is a book that if you bend the cover more than about 10 degrees, it will crease and damage it.

Re: Copiapoa
My copy of Graham's Copiapoa book is hardbound Daiv, maybe that version did not reach the USA?
Re: Copiapoa
Interesting. Yes, I've never seen a hardcover version. Glad to know it existed anyways.
I never did get a copy of the Thelocactus book and have never been able to find even a used one for sale.
