I'm a new member from the Western part of Uruguay. I've always loved cacti and I've been collecting them for a few years now. In Uruguay we have some native species like Parodia scopa, Parodia ottonis and Parodia mammulosa.
It's great to be able to interact with other cacti lovers too!

The first habitat slides I ever saw in the 1960's were from Uruguay. I belonged to an organisation then called the Chileans, but it also dealt with all S. American cacti. Apart from it's magazine it organised a cactus weekend in the UK every year with talks and slide shows. They were the first in the UK to start paying the airfare and accommodation for a foreign lecturer to come over, but now many Succulent Plant organisations put on such conventions with imported overseas speakers. The first speaker was a Dr. Moyna from Uruguay. Habitat slides were quite a novelty in the UK at that time since no UK collectors visited habitat and hardly any went abroad for their holidays in those days. Now due to the Internet we see slides from habitat from all around the world.
The Chileans weekends were eventually taken over by the Cactus Explorers Club, which broadened them out to include N. American cacti as well, but now usually importing a couple of speakers each year.

You also have Wigginsia's in Uruguay, now also sunk into Parodia by David Hunt.

Notocactus (Parodias) are not as popular in the UK as they were in the 1960's, but I still like them and have a few, as well as a few Wigginsia's with different names but all looking almost the same, though most have now been reduced to synonymy.
