Rate of fascination

Post by Nic »

I know it is possible to get crests from seeds, but what is the approximate rate of fascination, in other words, how many seeds would I need to sow in order to get one or two crests?
There is no cactus you can't eat, but you just might regret it if you eat the wrong one.

I don't think you're gonna get a good answer. There's many causes for fasciation (though I wish it were called fascination!), and genetics is just one. It seems cresting is more commonly seen due to non-genetic causes (e.g. fungi, bacteria, physical damage). Just have to play the lottery. I think, in general, you're probably looking at odds of at most 1/10,000, though I have no good reference for this.

It's rather like rose breeders, they raise thousands of seedlings every year to just find one of commercial value. The Japanese do the same with their weird Astrophytum's and keep crossing and re-crossing the most likely ones.

See:-
