Multiple Seeds planted

Post by wayoutwest302 »

Recently I planted 20 seeds in a small four inch pot wondering if they will all germinate or not and to my surprise they all did. The seeds I planted are from a golden rat tail cactus. Has anyone else ever tried this and can give me any advice on what I should do next with all of these popping up.

Thanks,

Nick

Twenty cactus seedlings in a four inch pot is actually quite a lot of room. Leave them until they are all touching eachother, then think about repotting. Even with a fast-growing species like this, it is likely to be at least a year.

So is it normal to plant multiple seeds when growing cactus?

A 2 inch pot is usually enough for the average packet of cactus seed you get from seed merchants (10-20 seeds). You can leave them growing in it for about a year before pricking them out. They seem to grow a bit better crowded together, although perhaps I left these, mainly Echinocereus, in for longer than optimum for about two years:-

Even flowering in the original 2 inch pot a couple of years from seed:-
