Pot size for Astrophytum asterias

Post by jcal »

Did I over pot this little plant?

I'm still slightly confused about potting cactus but I want to get it right. It has about 1 inch gap around the plant. Not sure about the roots of this one is the pot may be too tall.

A bit deep pot for the plant, hope drainage and wholes at the bottom are enough. Water carefully before active growing season starts and roots spread all over the soil mix.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

You just potted it, so you *do* know about the roots. You should put it in a pot the same size, or just slightly bigger than the roots. The size of the plant itself is pretty much irrelevant so long as you can squeeze it into the pot.

A. asterias has a taproot, modest compared to some cacti, but still a hint that it might not grow a huge amount of fibrous roots. I would suggest that the pot is too large.

If you really really like the pot but it is too big, you can always put the plant in a small plastic pot and drop it inside the pretty one.
