Hi
I've been given a small segment from the large cactus that you see in the first photo ( I think may be Cereus Peruvians?). I would like to know, if I pot it up as is, will it take root or do I need to cleanly cut a piece off the base, let it heal over and then pot it up??

I would say let it dry own in a shady place for 2 wks then pot it up. should be fine.

Stick it in the ground or a big bucket and forget about it. It'll be well-rooted in a few months.

Cacti root most easily at a joint, slicing the bottom off would just increase the chance of rot.

I agree, just let it dry put some rooting powder (if you'd like) on it after it dries, then pot it up and leave it be. You can check in a few months to see if it's rooting by giving it a little tug (if its hard to pull up its rooted, if not its not rooted completely yet) or just lifting it outta the pot if the roots are small enough it should just be moveable to see what's going on down their, its a patience thing i still got some who have barley any roots after months and months... Goodluck hun, great find! And an awesome cactus it came off of
