Parodia erubescens seeds?

Post by fanaticactus »

Is the P. erubescens self-pollinating? I ask because an old dried flower fell off today and as I picked it up, many tiny seeds fell out of its dried, open base. It certainly does not look like a fruit, and there was no other Parodia flower open when this one bloomed. Could it have accidentally cross-pollinated with another genus?

They self-pollinate. I had one that produced a ton of seed while nothing else was in bloom at the same time. The fruits are so bristly you can hardly tell there's a fruit inside there - and then they break open and dump seeds everywhere. They sprout easily, too; I had a whole bunch of seedlings pop up in the pot with my old plant.

Thanks, greenknight! Sorry for the delay in acknowledging your answer, but I don't seem to be getting notifications of messages waiting in my mailbox. :-k
