James, you have yourself a Sodium vapor lamp there. Same as what I'm dealing with -- given the night blooming you get, I don't think I'll have anything to worry about once my Disco bueneckeri decides to flower for me. Time for some flash photography at night soon perhaps?

Actually Discocactus, hoteidoc - D. placentiformis (sensu stricto) and .......... D. alteolens (syn). I will keep you in mind for seed.hoteidoc wrote:Beautiful Melo's, James! I'll take that over "Easter" Lillies. What species? And when you get seeds, can I get in line for some?

Re: Darkness and cacti stomata
The only thing Melocactus and Discocactus really have in common Hoteidoc is a cephalium as I understand they are not closely related:-

Thanks, Dave - that's what I did (since I don't haven't been involved with Disco's (oh wait, I was-- back in the '70's with John Travalta & the BeeGee's ). Just saw cephalium & jumped to conclusion. Aren't Disco's out of Brazil too, tho?
Once bitten by the cactus collecting/growing bug, there is no known cure!
There's no 12 step programme for Cactaholics...so I shall just have to get some more!!

I will take that Dave if you don't mind. Discocactus are indeed mostly endemic to Brazil, hoteidoc - just a few grow in Bolivia in close proximity to Brazil (naturally named Discocactus boliviensis). I christened the Gila monster that resides under Dan Bach's seed greenhouse "Disco dancer" in honor of this, one of my favorite cactus genera.hoteidoc wrote:Thanks, Dave - that's what I did (since I don't haven't been involved with Disco's (oh wait, I was-- back in the '70's with John Travalta & the BeeGee's ). The flowers of Discocactus are very different to Melocactus too being very much larger:-

And, of course, possessing a "heavenly" fragrance - some much more than others. Last summer a neighbor came by one night to ask how I was able to grow Gardenias so well and in such profusion for the fragrance was so noticeable in his front garden. I showed him the several Discocactus buenekeri (which in my opinion produces some of the most fragrant of all Discocactus flowers) plants that were in flower that night and he was amazed.DaveW wrote:The flowers of Discocactus are very different to Melocactus too being very much larger ..........
