How To Properly Care For Silver Torch Cactus

Post by popo »

Hi,

I am new to this forum and Cacti in general and would like to know how to properly care for a recently gifted silver torch cactus. (I hope I have identified it correctly).

The Cactus is to be kept indoors (I live in New York City) near a window that has plenty of natural sunlight.

The tallest stem is about 32 inches or 82 cm and the others vary in size, as you can see from the photos.

I would really like to be able to properly care for this cactus and watch it grow and bloom throughout the years so any tips on how best to care for it, would be greatly appreciated.

My main question is, based on the size, how often should I water it and how much water should I give it??? Also, should I add nutrients to the water? Should I repot it? Should I add some kind of stick to make sure the tallest stem does't break (it leans out ever so slightly)

Last question, as you can see from the pics, there are a couple of brown spots on two of the stems. Are these signs of current or future disease? How should I avoid this worsening.

As I said, I am a complete novice, so any help or advice will go a long way!

Thanks!

I have heard that they appreciate a fairly short dormancy period and quite a large pot due to the speed that it can grow.
