Ummm is this normal?

Post by ohmamadeer »

Just noticed this white fuzz on my cactus (not sure of the type - any help identifying would be much appreciated as well). If it's not normal is there anything I can do for it?

I just took a look at your digital image and magnified it a bit. I did not spot anything unusual about your plant. Some cacti do have wooly (hairy) areoles at the base of the spines. However, there are also some insect pests that have a whitish coloring, e.g. mealybugs, whiteflies, armored scale insects, etc..These critters will hang out where they are hard to spot and protected from their natural enemies.
I do not see anything abnormal about your cactus though.
About getting a tentative identification, I do not feel brave enough to come up with one. It could be a Mammillaria or perhaps another genus.

Agree with Harald that there doesn't seem to be anything unusual with your plant, not visible on the photo anyway. As for the identification, I think it resembles more a Parodia rather than Mammillaria, but I could be wrong.
