Can by a dead bugs or fungi on the stem. Is the tissue soft under these spots?
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

Re: What's wrong ?
Sooty mould can be caused naturally from nectar produced by the cactus, or from the same sort of sugary stuff produced by pests. Since this type of cactus doesn't produce nectar except inside its flowers, I'd guess you have a pest problem. The mould itself is just unsightly, but you need to deal with the insects that are causing it.

Thank you both for your replies ...
The tissue is not soft, and I can see now that it has lots of mealy bugs under the spines.
I'll have to get rid of them.
