More issues with my ferrocactus

Post by larziepan »

Okay, so I have no idea what is happening, but I think my cacti might have rot.

This first picture was taken on saturday when I first started noticing a weird lightish green color.

This one is from today. The light green weirdness has spread upwards.
The cactus is slightly soft, but not enough that I can penetrate the skin.
So, is my little guy a goner or can he still be saved?

Not sure if it's rot. It could even be too much light that is turning the dark green into yellow-green. When a cactus is rotting from the base, in most cases you can save the top of it by cutting. You could remove it from the soilmix and check if the roots are rotten.

My Fero has a yellowish color near the base, the old part develops it before it turns brown and shrivels. Unusual that it's traveled so far up the stem, but it could just be from the stress of the mealybug infestation, or the treatment with alcohol (we've got some history with this plant, Bruno - check out Larz's previous posts).

As long as the top is still green, I'm less concerned about the color than the fact that it's soft. Rotten tissue gets mushy, not just a little soft, but it's still not a good sign - I agree that you should check the roots. Post a picture of them.

The roots might not be working so good. I don't find Ferocactus rot easily, as in mushy collapse, but they can lose their roots and then not look happy for a long time. Or it might just be from having pests.

So I got back from class this afternoon to a large black chunk on the side of my cactus. I poked it and It squished pretty well. I pulled it up to look at the roots and it didn't look good. I'm going to try to save it but i'm honestly not holding out too much hope.
