I got this cactus as a present for my boyfriend and it's not been kept in very healthy conditions until now [-(. Previously it was placed within a larger pot but not properly repotted which has caused damaged to the majority of the outer spines, and it also had very little sunlight as he kept it on a shaded shelf.

He now has repotted it properly and placed it so it gets plenty of sunlight and the spines seem to be recovering and turning less brown. But in the center there is this brown patch that looks dried out and very much dead, and i'm not too sure what to do, do i remove this section?

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!

If it really is dead (and it certainly looks like it), you can leave it there if you want but if you prefer it to be gone you can take it out. Maybe with the help of some tool. I assume it has it's own roots, so you pull the dead roots out along with it. But maybe it is attached to one of the other plants. Not a problem, but you need to pull a bit harder but still gently.
