Can anyone tell me what is causing the discoloration at the base of this plant? It is not soft or rotting. There is new growth on the top of the plant and otherwise seems healthy.

Looks OK. Not quite ready for the National Show, but not going to die. The brown corking is a hint that it isn't getting ideal conditions. Maybe needs feeding, or perhaps just not warm enough.

Looks a little parched. A splash of water shouldn't do it any harm as long as it's warm enough.
