Hi cacti friends! I was hoping someone could help me with an issue I had with one of my cactus plants. It's a gift that I received from a friend, and I don't know the name of it and how I should take care of it.
There's a dark spot growing on it. Will this go away, is it permanent, etc.? Thank you! I've attached a photo below.

Re: Weird dark spot
Hello!
This a pachycereus marginatus and the spot could be a sunburn or cold damage.
A rule of thumb i have is if it doesn't spread, you're okay

Thanks for letting me know, Elie! Will this spot go away, or is it permanent?

As brixtertabun says, scars are permanent. However, this cactus grows extremely fast and can put out more than a foof of growth per year if conditions are suitable. So the scar will evetually be outgrown

Ah thank you all for the help! I placed it in front of a window with the sun shining through...so I take it that was a big mistake. Does anyone know how to take care of this particular plant?

Keep it at the window for now. They are very easy to grow! Keep it coldish and unwatered in winter and water ONLY when the soil COMPLETELY dries in late spring through summer

That spot will be seen even outgrown. But in order to be sure it doesn't spread it needs monitoring. Put the plant at the same window and position but with some shading screen, mesh or other tissue. After 2 - 3 weeks it can be removed. Also if you expect vigorous growth the pot and soil must be changed to bigger and better ones.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.
