Is my Astrophytum asterias fruit ripe?

Post by BarryRice »

Hey Guys,

I have a couple of Astrophytum crosses cooking. Some of the crosses obviously didn't take (the flowers fell off the plant a few days after flowering). However, some stayed on the plant for a few weeks, slowly enlarging. The first one fell off yesterday. Should I wait for the capsule to dry before investigating, or should I open it up while it is still soft and succulent?
I'll grow it as long as it doesn't have glochids. Gaudy flowers a plus.

If the fruit splits open and or falls off, you can open it up and clean the seeds.
I prefer to wash them in water and let them sit dry for at least a week or two before sowing but I think Astros will germinate straight from the fruit if conditions are right.
Forget the dog...Beware of the plants!!!
