Collecting Seeds from Rebutia

Post by RobP »

Hello all

Could someone give me advice on how to collect seed from my Rebutia Carnival please? I have tried looking on youtube with no success.

Many thanks

Look for small, round fruits forming at the base of the flower stalk. I think that's where the fruit forms. No fruits, no seed, which means there was no fertilisation with viable pollen. :P Leave the fruit to ripen on the plant, however I'm not sure how to tell if the fruit are ripe or not. There don't seem to be many pictures of Rebutia fruits on the internet.

Thanks for the reply Dan, but she doesn't seem to produce fruits at the base of the flower stalk. :(

Here are a few images of fruits on Rebutia perplexa and muscula so you know exactly what to look for.

You evidently will need pollen from a seperate plant to cross pollinate with your plant to produce seed on the one you have.
I know R. muscula is self fertile, but I dont know if any othe other rebutia will self.

I can usually tell when the fruits are ripe on my rebutias when the ants start making off with all the seed. :P
Its all been open pollinated anyway, so Im not interested in sowing any of it and just let them have it.
Forget the dog...Beware of the plants!!!

my Rebtuia violaciflora produced seed, and I didn't even pollinate it!
Buying a cactus a day will keep the madness away.
