Hey folks
I know that many cacti cannot be selfed. So here's my question...
Suppose I have clone A of a cactus species, and I pollinate it with pollen from plant B. If I raise the next generation of AxB plants to maturity, can I successfully back cross them with a parent (i.e., Ax(AxB)), or make F2 hybrids (i.e., (AxB)x(AxB)), or are they too closely related? Will the crosses even take, or might the progeny be weak?
Progeny back crossed, or crossed with each other?
Progeny back crossed, or crossed with each other?
I'll grow it as long as it doesn't have glochids. Gaudy flowers a plus.
Re: Progeny back crossed, or crossed with each other?
As far as I know both back crossing and inbreeding should be possible, if you are dealing with hybrids you might run into some completely sterile plants though it is rare.
