Rooting Blossfeldia pups.

Post by abdulhafezzahruddin »

I have recently bought grafted Blossfedia liliputiana. I am quite concerned that the hylocereus stock is beginning to turn yellowish, perhaps due to the journey.
Can we root Blossfeldia pups? I don't have any rootstock at the moment and I am thinking of rooting the pups. Anybody have had this experience?

Not tried rooting the pups down but if the stock is deteriorating you could try Hanazono's method of rooting it down as for a similar Aztekium using just the vascular bundles in the 7-9th posts down here:-

1. Yellowish hylocereus stock
Hylocereus will turn the body color to yellowish when the light was too strong.
Hylocereus should not receive direct sunlight.
Since I have not seen the photo, I can not make an accurate comment but the light in your place may be stronger than that of the original owner.

2. Rooting of Blossfeldia pups
I tried rooting several times some years ago but all failed.
Rooting of blossfeldia pups is not easy.

I also failed rooting of Aztekium many times but I got a successful result by using rooting hormone, honey.

I assume the Blossfeldia has many pups.
You can try the rooting by using some pups with a rooting hormone.

Since a pup is quite small, you should bury it in permeable medium to minimise drying up problem.
Only top of the pup should be opened.

3. Degrafting with a short vascular bundles.
Even if all soft tissue of Hylocereus are rotted out, the vascular bundles are still alive.

The key of this method is not drying the vascular bundles.
The vascular bundles will die soon when you dried them.
Please prepare semi-wet potting mix and set the plant immediately after removed soft tissues.

I think you have got a good opportunity to experience many difficult tasks.
