I use both methods.

Normal degrafting:
It is the best way of the degrafting, I think.
The preparation for the rooting is a bit difficult.
The grafted joint is normally embedded into the scion deeply and you have to remove it completely.
If any stock tissues were remained in the scion, you fail the rooting.

The cacti rooted with this method will turns to a normal appearance.

With a short stock, 15~ 20 mm:
This method is used years by Japanese professional cacti nursery persons.
The short stock buries into potting mix.
Since you can not see the stock, the commercial value can be pushed up.

It is called "Dai tsuki oroshi" means a degrafting with a short stock but it is not a true degrafting.
If you did not have enough confident of the rooting for a variegated cacti, you can use this method.
When you failed with rooting of the stock, you can again try the normal degrafting.

Permanent stock such as H. jusbertii and M. geometrizans
The stock turns woody appearance and alive quite long.
Roots will never develop from the scion.
Since the condition is still grafted, the cacti can tolerate over watering.
Some of my cacti used this method alive more than 10 years and still going.

Non-permanent stocks such as Pereskiopsis and Hylocereus
Roots came out from the stock initially and cacti rely on the stock for several years.
Roots from the scion will be developed when the stock died.

You ca select any methods as you like referred to the scion and the stock.
