Why degraft?

Post by GK23 »

Hi,
Since I'm fairly new to the whole cactus thing, I don't really understand why you need to degraft.
As far as I can work out, you graft to speed up the size of the scion. Why not keep it so it grows until it is massive? Or is it just aesthetic?
Sorry if this is a dumb question  and thanks for the help. =D>

I think people graft cacti for different purposes.
I do not graft cacti to speed up the size of the scion.

Grafted scions are in flower earlier and more flowers compared to own root cacti.

e.g.
When you sowed Ariocarpus seeds in spring and grafted young seedlings, they will be in flower in autumn.
You can harvest seeds next spring.
When you tried to develop a new cultivar or a new hybrid, this method allows to repeat it every year even if it was very slow growing species such as Ariocarpus.
