It looks like the edges were beveled, then it is normal to have the blacking/corking, its related to humidity levels ;)

I think it's fine, if you look at old Japanese specimens that are grafted the entire jusbertii stock is usually all corked, the black part yeah i agree is normal and is from the graft cuts originally but maybe too much moisture as well ? Not that it's a bad thing or anything just looks like its been in a pretty wet environment to me.
