Hana's grafting in 2016/2017

Post by Hanazono »

The grafting season has come in the southern hemisphere again.
I use off-shoots of Pereskiopsis as grafting stocks.

22nd August 2016
I cut old shoots of Pereskiopsis back and waited new shoots coming up.
There were 72 pots in total.
Image

1st November 2016
Off-shoots had grown enough length for stocks.
Image

I use 15 cm length shoots as the stocks.
18 shoots were cut off slightly longer than 15 cm by a scissors.
Image

They were cut back as 15 cm length accurately by a knife and removed leaves on lower part of shoots.
Image

Each shoot was set in a 5 cm square tube for the rooting.
The 5 cm tube is easy to handle during the grafting jobs.
It is possible to accommodate 18 tubes in a rooting box.

5th November 2016

I grafted 18 seedlings of Ariocarpus retusus cv Shinkawa tama zouge in this morning.
Since stocks were set for the rooting on 1st November, I believe roots have not developed on stocks yet.
I will keep them for 10 days in the box.
The attached photo is seedlings sown seeds on 17th July 2016.

13th November 2016

Since the grafting process of 1st batch was completed, I repotted 17 stocks with scions into 90 mm square pots in this morning.
18 seedlings were grafted on 5th November but I removed one because the joint area of the scion was not large enough.
The growing speed of scion is slow if the joint area was not large enough.

Several stocks had started to form roots but the majority were still no roots.

All Ariocarpus including kotschoubeyanus are not self-fertile.

You have to wait until stigma to open completely and pollen turn to be powdery.
2nd day of opening will show this condition but you have to make sure the condition and wait.

I pinch pistils by a tweezers rub stigmas of other plants.

If the opening timing of 2 plants did not meet, you can use preserved pollen.
