My first graft!

Post by Daniel »

Hi all, I tried my hand at grafting today as I was a bit bored 8-[ . I grafted a L. williamsii seedling to a Myrtillocactus geometrizans stock.

I first cleaned the knife in hot water and used anti-bacteria soap, then rinsed the knife again in hot water.
Then I cut the growth point of my Myrtillocactus geometrizans off as cleanly as I could.
I then removed the roots of the L. williamsii.
After that I put them together so that the vascular bands were touching.
Then I "sealed the deal" with a plastic bag and an elastic band.

It is now upstairs in the warmth of my room to promote growth and getting plenty of light on my windowsill. Have I done everything right and how long does it usually take for grafts to take?

Here are some pics:

Looks good to me. :) You'll know within 2 weeks whether it's taken or not. They can be slow to start growing at first, though. My latest graft on Epiphyllum hasn't done much growth, but the scion has been fattened up quite a lot. :P

Happy growing!

Thanks Dan, I was just experimenting because I have one B. liliputiana seedling that I wanted to graft as well, if this works my free time just got a lot more interesting! :D

The graft looks good! I haven't had much luck with grafts, currently I have 3 seedling grafts on various stocks that I'm hoping will take.

Hi Robb, unfortunately not, the scion dried up in a few days after the graft, shame. Oh well always next time :) . How are your grafts going?

not so good either, but I do have a setiechinopsis mirabilis that I hope (fingers crossed) is starting to put forward some new spines!

I find it a little bit difficult lining up the vascular rings - especially with seedling so tiny. It seems like it is a guessing game - either a hit or miss. But don't give up!!
