Gymnocalycium graft on opuntia subulata

Post by CactusSquirrel »

This had a completely rotten hylocereus part in the store and I wanted to save it. I had an opuntia subulata so I took an arm and grafted it onto it. All seems to be going ok so far. It even had a small root forming at the bottom at the end of the week after being stuck together. When I potted it it seems that the rootstock is too short. Is there any hope for this?

It should be fine. I have used short rootstocks before with no problem. Just be sure to watch out for rot on the stock every now and again.

there is one problem that Gymnocalycium don't have hrolofil and can not perform photosynthesis because that is grafted and the Opuntia is too small to be out photosynthesis for both cactus

I guess I will just keep it until it dies and hopefully I can use the babies on it to practice more grafting in the mean time.

A small update. It is alive and well and growing extra arms from the rootstock.

I would prune the offsets from the root stock so that it focuses its growth on the scion. your gymno has a great peach color going on.
