Pereskiopsis roots broken off

Post by Driller64 »

This is probably a stupid question, but when I pulled a Pereskiopsis cutting out to check for roots, I heard a breaking sound, and then I saw that the roots that grew on it were broken off. Now I am worried they will not grow back. Do the roots usually grow back once they are broken off?

Yes they should grow again, Pereskiopsis should root very easily and fast.

I root most of mine by simple removing the cuttings from the parent plants and standing them in an inch of water. It take approx. 2 weeks in the UK.

Yours will be fine.

Oh yeah, I repotted some of my Pereskiopsis cuttings a few days ago. I think I managed to avoid breaking any roots fortunately. When should they start showing new growth cause I really want more cuttings ;)

I can't answer for your cactus specifically, but as I have observed of my arrojadoa picillata, I saw new growth within two to three weeks! I'm sorry I dont have any more specific information than that. They are different species so maybe this figure is way off, but maybe it can be a frame of reference? Hopefully someone more experienced can help you out.

The Pereskiopsis cuttings have started growing. Hopefully they will grow fast and give me more cuttings for grafting.

Our Pereskiopsis look identical and are at just about the same stage of growth, mine might be one or two days ahead. Maybe we got cuttings from the same seller on ebay, mine were top cuts :lol:

Here's the place I bought them from: http://www.ebay.com/itm/5x-Pereskiopsis ... 53fcf401b9" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Did you get them from here?

Yep, ours must be brothers (or sisters). I only got two cuttings from them though, both top cuts. I rooted them in a bubbler that I use for hydroponically rooting pepper plants, they got some nice roots in 2-3 days then got stuck into soil. They already have a lot of new growth after initially losing all but their top set of leaves.
