melocactus offsets?

Post by KNME »

It is said that melocacti are exclusively sown from seed but how did this happen? I would love to see my melocacti with offsets too :D

(the photo is from the internet)

Probably the growing point was damaged some time ago, that seems to encourage offsets.

......can those offsets grow more cephalium? Would be quite a cool- looking plant!

It looks old mabey they just do grow like that when old
And as the walls come down and as I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade recalling all of the times
I have died and will die.
It's all right.
I dont mind
I dont mind.
I DONT MIND

This kind of offsetting begins when the mother plant is old and ready to die. It creates offsets to sontinue living through them (much like us, people, right?). After the mother plant ceph will die, a new will appear on one of the offsets. I saw that in Beijing Botanical Garden...

I'm not sure that's right. I've seen pictures of Melo's in habitat with much bigger cephalia. There appears to be some damage on the mother plant though, which could indicate what induced the offsetting. Those offsets will produce cephalia when they get big enough. :)
