growing from small cutting

Post by nbcrty »

I found a small pad that fell off a O. monocatha and decided to grow a baby cactus from it.
I let the cactus callous for 24 hours and then planted it in moist all purpose miracle grow.
should i have done anything different?

Dry compost would've been better, since using damp compost it likely to make it rot off, but it still might be okay. :)

thanks for the reply, i needed to moisten the soil so i can get the pad into the soil without it being extremely loose, wish my luck.

You also need to cut that Miracle-Gro with 4 or 5 parts coarse sand, Turface, NAPA 8822/AutoZone oil-dry, poultry grit, pumice, something.....! That stuff straight will also cause rot.

i went to the gardening center at Lowe's asked for pumice, and they didn't even know what it is. After i explained what it is, they wanted to bring me to healthcare to find pumice to remove callouses off your foot... they also tried selling me the miracle grow cacti mix. After browsing the store i have found something similar to this. and opinions if this will work: http://www.lowes.com/pd_92130-76450-GP0 ... ct_price|0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Supposedly that works - for now, but still cheaper alternatives. Just keep your eyes open :wink:

I would not water that again. Any small opuntia like this I have started only get a few drops of water (from a dropper) on top of the pad so the water goes straight to the rooting stem. I give a few drops weekly until I start seeing new life.

You can also lay the pad flat and it should root.

I would just lay the pad flat on the surface and it will send lots of roots from the underside. I have found they root a lot faster that way - for me anyway.

Yes, it seems there is more potential area for roots to form when it's laid flat :mrgreen: .

If you have a Napa auto parts close by, you can use this as a substitute for pumice or pearlite.
Napa 8822, Diatomaceous Earth Absorbent.

I have used it for years to grow hundreds of seedlings, but also use it in a pinch for mature plants when I run out of pumice.

I think the "electromagnetics" of our watching inhibits root production :wink: -- forget about it & go find another plant project :lol: Most of us can speak from experience -- it will produce! :D

Opuntias are pretty easy to root,a member on this forum sent me humifusa pads.Now they have new pads growing from aeroles.
