I buy construction sand, the kind used for concrete, and run it thru a piece of window screen. The fines are thrown back on the cement sand pile or on a garden walkway and the coarse stuff is used for cactus. Straight construction sand has too many fines to use for most cactus mixes. The coarse nature of the particles is what provides the good drainage.

I use chicken grit. Just make sure it is not oyster shell. I buy it at feed supply store.
