Echinocereus

Hi all
I have an old E. rigidissimus var. rubispinus in the ground and it's starting to look really gnarly. The new growth is beautiful though. Does anyone have any experience with taking stem cuttings of this species? It's about twelve inches tall. I would really like to lop off the top few inches and see if I can revitalize the plant. Also hoping of course that the leftover trunk will produce some offsets.
Thanks,
Franj
