Cold Hardy Miniature Opuniads!

Post by jaredhiggs1 »

I am looking for more miniatures to consider for my collection. Any ideas? I have several forms of O. fragilis and hybrids and the usual miniatures but would love to hear of more! Favorites and recommendations as well would be appreciated. :D

Jared: I am in Carson City (zone 6a) and have had good luck with Opuntia polyacantha, var. erinacea and var. hystricina, in the ground for 2 years. They can be completely covered in snow and survive just fine. We had a couple of nights last Winter that were down to -9F, and the Opuntias did fine. I very handy book that
I use as a reference is "Cacti, Agaves, and Yuccas of CA and NV, by Stephen Ingram. I also have "Cactus in the Snow", by Bruce Brethauer.

Hybrids involving Opuntia aurea and O. macrorhiza are good for your area and have nice flowers. Some plants in northeastern Nevada are hybrids of O. macrorhiza and O. polyacantha and these are very hardy for your area

There's also many O. polyacantha x fragilis hybrids, some are quite attractive.
