A long stretch of sunny mild weather has caused a very early jump this year. Not putting away the snow shovel just yet though.
This last one was below ground level just a week ago.

some people in AZ needed their shovels. It snowed in the mountains around me.

Andy - Beautiful Semperviva! Where'd did you track it down? About the shovel? Put it away! This afternoon I put 2 Opuntia's & 18" Cereus outside (in pots) in ground. They've been in 24f a couple of times this winter (on porch) and they're raring to go! Wheeled out the 14" grusonii onto deck, although covering pot is always there. Eyeing the terra cotta planters, but will wait till after this next "chill down" in a week. In past 24 hrs went from 4 or 5 pads trying to stand up on 3 humifusa"s to that many per plant this afternoon. Keeping fingers crossed but my dozen or so Echinocer's, Escob's, & O.'s all survived! I found 4 tiny new pups! Sometimes Nature decides to be forgiving! I'm wagering on a rerun of last summer -- which for the cacti was outstanding!
Here's to hands in the dirt!

It's a Jovibarba, I got it here. Grows very fast and is indestructible.

As for the shovel, no! Average date of last measurable snow is March 28 here with May 10 as the latest that I know of. I give up on snow on April 15, after that date it gets quite rare but before its fairly common.

Looking good Andy. I noticed my E. missouriensis is taking on water now. I am not putting the shovel away quite yet either (but wouldn't mind if it just collects dust)

Was looking at the flower buds coming out of E. viridiflorus this afternoon and made a surprise discovery. Babies! Had no idea they were there.

Cute little guys! It is always nice to find volunteers! I have some that have sprouted all over my garden, but I really have no idea what they are

Congratulations on both pup & buds, Andy! I found a little pup on mine & it was planted (from ColdHardyCactus.com) back in June. Definitely wasn't there going into winter. No signs of buds - yet, but will be out prowling - with 2 days of 80's coming up ! Indoor Pedio is on verge of popping buds open! Recovery of humifusa has been astounding! from flat out Sat. to totally up yesterday!

The "Sprinkle System" (in the Northeast?) -- I've been thinking about it, esp. with the Pedio's!

Looks good Andy. Have you been able to see any losses this year? I think the plants really got a break this year and there will be very little winter losses, if any.
