Hardy Gardening

Post by ihc6480 »

Well, all are welcome to post any hardy cacti in this thread and I now have the first blooms in my garden so here we go.
This is always the first to bloom in my garden and a favorite of mine.

Nice! You gotta love the viridiflorus. I got buds coming out on mine but it'll be a few weeks before they open.

Ya Hoo!! That's a great plant to start this thread off with!! :D I like the neon color of yours. It makes those flowers realy pop in that shot.

I am going to post some shots from other threads I started this season. I hope you don't mind seeing them again.

I am in the Sunset magazine zone 2b and USDA zone 7a. Around the inter-mountain west a lot depends on elevation when you talk about zones. Seven miles west of my location the elevations increase dramatically. The zones drop off as a result. The zones at 7000+' drop to sunset zone 1a and USDA 5b. 8) As an added note freeze thaw cycles change a lot conpared to the higher elevations. Being in the rain shadow I do not get persistent snow cover or much in the way of yearly perception.

Sweet!
Great show, Bill!

Nice accompanyment, John :)

Happen to have a body pic of your suspected Gymno sp. John? The little part of the body i can see and the flowers, makes me think this is E. kinneplianus v. krugerii...? I can't imagine a Gymno surviving your winters :dontknow:

I know this not totally what is considered a hardy cactus, but hey its hardy here. Not too far from blooming, but had to take its pic today as its losing its winter color by the day.
Opuntia macrocentra and don't look too close or you might see it has a light scale infestation.

It's hardy for me too!! In the right micro climate up close to the south wall of the house. Out twenty feet into the yard it scares badly but never gets to the point of actually dieing. Just hangs on looking mange.:? So I moved it two years ago now it's happy. :)
