In the details

Post by peterb »

One of the reasons I like to sit and stare at plants is the fine details. Cacti and succulents are great for staring at odd patterns, colors, shapes, etc. I'm easily entertained! :-)

My camera doesn't take the greatest closeups but these are some sights that stopped me for a while during a crazy Tuesday. Anyone else with detail pics feel free to post.

I like the detailed cactus photos and there are so many in my albums.
Here are some of them:
(clic for big size pics.)

Extrafloral nectary gland in the axil. This structure is permanent.

Coryphantha elephantidens ssp.elephantidens SB31
Image

Coryphantha octacantha 'clava' SB251
Extrafloral nectary gland in the axil, permanent.
Image

Coryphantha pulleineana SB33
This one is a temporary extrafloral nectary gland during flowering.
Image

Coryphantha salinensis
Image

Thelocactus setispinus
Extrafloral nectary glands on the spiniferous areol during flowering time.
Image

Acanthocalycium klimpelianum
These buds explain the genus' name, spines on the buds.
Image

Astrophytum coahuilense
Image

Astrophytum myriostigma 'columnaris' cv.minima (Huboki)
The buds of this cultivar generally turn to offsets like this one.

Love them Peter. I wish I could take such nice macro photos.

I can't - but I'll post this anyway as I literally went out and stared at the apex of the plant every day with a magnifying glass - it was just SO cool looking. I think I liked it better BEFORE the flowers bloomed - and they aren't bad!!

It was even nicer when the buds were smaller.

Great topic and pics Peterb, I do the same thing, Im staring at my plants all the time.
You really miss alot if you dont slow down, especially around opntias...ok, Ouch! glochids in your cheek is no fun! :P
But if your not looking close, your missing half the beauty. :)
I'll have to get some shots later, honestly never thought anyone else would be all that interested.
Forget the dog...Beware of the plants!!!

Demir, great photos of extrafloral nectaries, not something that's so easy to notice, really. I like the Astrophytum coahuilense "icing" too.

Pelecyphora is just not possible, really. That's what I think every time I see one. Great looking plant Souky.

I don't take macros with the camera. What I do is try to hold as still as possible and take a medium pic and then crop it as far as the resolution will go after it's imported.

looking forward to more keen eye for the cactus guy/gal perspectives....

Here are a couple.

Mammillaria perbella - short awl-like centrals with black tips.

wider view...

Image

Mammillaria microthele - close up of new heads growing from the side of the plant. There is a ring of new growth around the base and about half way up the plant.

And a new Avonia alstonii is born.

This one's called Drosanthemum hispidum for some reason.

Look away if you don't want to see the naughty bits.

Gibbaeum pubescens seedlings, another one that didn't take much imagination to name.

Excellent details everyone. I always found that "watering time" was the best for regularily studying the plants and looking for whatever new feature you might find.

Loving all these photos, thanks for posting. Hob, I was hoping you'd post some macros! Those are amazing. Great shots Ian and Antonio. The mam. bombycina is cool. Ian, that Avonia flower pic is sweet indeed.

I'm really enjoying this thread. It just goes to show that there is much more to appreciate about cacti than just their flowers. In fact, I try to buy cacti that I can enjoy all year long, not just flowering time. I really get into spines. Their color, shape, and intricate symmetry. Here's one of a Melocactus........
