Cacti conservation
Re: Cacti conservation
It's only a pamphlet/booklet, and isn't specifically about conservation, but "Cactáceas Nativas de Chile" touches on the subject. For example it briefly explains the imminent risk of loosing Eriosyce aspillagae from both it's known habitats.
Re: Cacti conservation
Just had an email from Florencia Senoret earlier this week as a matter of fact, she is not visiting habitats as she has a young child and not selling seed at the moment, though she may again later as she still has her stock plants. Juan and Florencia broke up a year or so ago and Florencia finished the book on her own. Juan Acosta (Spiniflores or Pescaomarino as he used to write under on various forums) seems to have quit cactus collecting altogether. It was produced as a book as well as put on line as I have a copy of the book signed by both Florencia and Juan. They did find another population of E. aspillagae but as I recall the ground was gradually dropping into the sea. It is not certain whether they still exist at Hacienda Tanume. Fred Kattermann found them there some years ago though.

Re: Cacti conservation
Aymeric de Barmon had seed from the Hacienda Tanume locality under FK 197, and Cabo Carranza under WM 348 (as ssp. maechlerorum) for sale this year.

Re: Cacti conservation
E. aspillagae ssp maechleorum is illustrated in Fred Katterman's Eriosyce book on page 71 next to E. aspillagae FK 197 from Hacienda Tanume and numbered FK 755 as "E. marksiana" since at that time it had not been described as a subspecies of E. aspillagae by Helmut Walter.
Under E. aspillagae Fred says for FK 755:-
"FK 755 from Cabo Carranza (Prov. Talca) may belong here on the basis of it's fruit dehiscence and seed similarities. At the present I place it with E. marksiana."
Walter says in his summary in his 2002 publication in the German Journal K.u.a.S:-
"A new subspecies from the Chilean Province of Talca is described here as Eriosyce aspillagae subsp. maechleri. It is distinguished from E. aspillagae mainly by it's spination, more and narrower ribs, bell shaped flowers, exertion of style and mode of fruit dehiscence."
As MD says the name was later corrected to maechlerorum. This is not the Juan Acosta E. aspillagae from the new location Spiniflores mentioned in the previous CactiGuide link.
Surprisingly SuccSeed does not list it since they supply many FK seeds.
