Dead or dark Echinocereus engelmannii ?

Post by J-M »

Hello, I collected seeds from this E. engelmannii near Phoenix, AZ. Most specimens were ''yellow'', but this one was really dark. I cannot say if it was dead or alive. What do you think ? Is there a var. something that looks like this ?

Anyway the seeds were viable and the seedlings are 3 weeks old now !

Think it was dead and you have collected the last crop of seeds.

A live one should look like this even black-spined partially. Photo from that area.
If your cacti mess in your job just forget about the job.

Thanks George !

Yes, all the fruits from the hundreds of live engelmanniis that I found were already eaten by rodents/birds. I was there for a week in September and the only seeds I found of this specie were on that dark cacti. At least it did not die in vain ... His descendants will grow 4600 kilometers (2850 miles) away !
